Background

The process of bioremediation involves a simple yet complicated process of adding microorganisms to a contaminated area. Throughout history, new forms and practices of bioremediation have been developed to clean up oil spills, decontaminate soil, and make the environment a safer, better place for all organisms to thrive.

Timeline

Monumental events which have shaped bioremediation to what it is today began around 600 BC.  The bioremediation industry began to thrive after the 1960’s and has been growing in popularity ever since.

Impacts

Bioremediation allows us the ease and efficiency to clean up waste naturally. This causes multiple effects on the earth making the environment a healthier place for all organisms.

Issues

Although bioremediation is an easy way get rid of toxins, multiple social, ethical, and legal issues question its success. Since bioremediation is a very natural process, the issues come to play in controlling and testing processes so we know they are safe and efficient for effective environmental clean-up.
